Who We Are
Community Development Institute (CDI) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening community-based systems that serve children, families, and vulnerable populations. Since 1970, CDI has partnered with federal agencies, states, and local organizations to stabilize programs, build capacity, and support effective leadership in complex operating environments.
With more than five decades of experience, CDI brings deep operational expertise, systems thinking, and a people-centered approach to some of the nation’s most critical human service initiatives. Our work spans technical assistance, transition support, program management, and leadership development, often stepping in when continuity, accountability, and trust matter most.
What Makes CDI Different
CDI operates at the intersection of strategy and operations. Unlike organizations that focus solely on advising, CDI is frequently responsible for direct implementation, including operating Head Start and Early Head Start programs, managing large workforces, overseeing facilities, and safeguarding federal investments.
